Residential Water Softeners

How ion exchange works
Water softeners remove hardness by passing water through a resin bed made up of small charged beads. These beads are initially loaded with sodium ions. As hard water flows through the system, calcium and magnesium (the minerals that cause hardness) are attracted to and held by the resin, while sodium ions are released into the water in exchange. Over time, the resin becomes saturated with hardness minerals and must be regenerated. During regeneration, a concentrated brine solution is drawn through the system, flushing the accumulated calcium and magnesium to drain and recharging the resin with sodium ions, restoring its softening capacity.
